The Comrades Marathon is an annual ultra-marathon that takes place in South Africa.  The marathon challenges athletes from all around the world as they attempt the, approximately, ninety kilometre run between the cities Pietermaritzburg and Durban.  The idea for the Comrades Marathon was born to, British born, Vic Clapham.  As a young child, Mr. Clapham and his family left England and moved to the Cape Colony in South Africa.  At the outbreak of the Great War in 1914, Clapham joined the 8th South African Infantry.  He fought in the African Savannah until peace was declared in 1918.  With the desire to commemorate fallen soldiers, Clapham came up with the idea of an ultra-marathon.  The Comrades Marathon, he envision, would put average people to a test which could be fought and overcome.  On the 24th of May 1921, the very first Comrades Marathon was run.  34 athletes left the city of Pietermaritzburg and ran the ninty kilometres to Durban.  Except for the World War II years, the Comrades Marathon has taken place every year, alternating the starting city each year.
