Where In South Africa Is Benoni?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Benoni is a town in the province of Gauteng in South Africa. It is located on the East Rand. The area of Benoni is a part of Greater Johannesburg. Since the year 2000, Benoni has been a part of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality.

Benoni has a rather unfortunate English translation. It means son of my sorrows. The town of Benoni was named after the son of Rachel in the Book of Genesis in the Holy Bible. In the year 1881, the then surveyor-general, Johan Rissik was unable to assign any title deeds to the vast amount of state property that lay unclaimed. In the month of September 1887, the Cornishmen established the Chimes Mine and gold deposits were found in the area. The city was known as Little Cornwall for sometime.

The South African-born Hollywood actress Charlize Theron (of Monster fame) was born in the town of Benoni on August 7, 1975.
