Which Is The Longest Desert In The World?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Deserts are defined as regions that generally receive less than ten inches of precipitation a year. The world's deserts are categorized as sub-tropical deserts, cool coastal deserts, cold winter deserts, and polar regions.
The longest 'cold' desert in the world is the continent of Antarctica. It records an average precipitation of only 2 inches per year. Its recorded longest length is almost 6,000 kilometers. Antarctica also has the longest desert coastline.

The longest 'hot' desert is the Sahara desert. It measures between 1,200 and 2,000 kilometers from north to south and about 5,000 kilometers long ranging from east to west.

For a curious comparison, highest temperatures in the Sahara record 134 degrees Fahrenheit while in Antarctica they record -128 degrees Fahrenheit.

The Sahara is the second-largest desert on Earth after Antarctica, and it is the world's largest hot desert. At over 9,000,000 square kilometers (3,500,000 sq mi), it covers most of Northern Africa, making it almost as large as the continent of Europe. But the largest desert is in Antarctica. It is also the longest.
