Why Is The Millennium Bridge In London Infamous?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The footbridge built to celebrate the Millennium in the capital had a shaky start. Opened in June 2000, it had to be closed after just three days by the Metropolitan Police because it began to sway under the weight of pedestrians. The bridge, which links the Tate Modern on the south and St. Paul's Cathedral on the north side of the River Thames, underwent an 18-month facelift costing £5 million. It is now sufficiently strong enough to carry over 10,000 people per day, without the risk of wobbling. Designed by Sir Norman Foster and Antony Caro, the bridge looks pretty spectacular, especially when lit up with fibre optics at night. Looking across the bridge from the south side, one of the most breathtaking views of St. Paul's Cathedral can be enjoyed. The spot is a popular location for photographers and video camera operators. There is a spectacular view of The City, the financial district of London, towards the middle of the bridge.
