 Whether California would ally itself with Mexico, with Spain, or establish an independent country with lisp-less Spanish as the main language. Russians were also there decades before English-speakers arrived.

Native populations were virtually enslaved when feasible without it being considered to be a political issue.

 The first thought is transportation. It made it almost impossible to leave or arrive at that time, that could have been to our advantage more than we know.
