Rome is an magnificent city to visit. Although it may not be the most user friendly for those in wheel chairs, it is definitely worth the visit.

I suggest you decide what you most want to see the most. Fascinating in terms of Rome, is the area near the Vatican, and St Peters, (which includes a fabulous museum and art gallery unequalled just about anywhere) which is a marvel. With huge wide open spaces and squares, where you can have a coffee outside and watch Rome go by.

So try to get a hotel near here, as it is full of good B and B's and hotels.
Ask them if they have wheel chair access, the better ones do, and if they can not put you on the ground floor, is there a lift. Most people in the tourist trade speak a smattering of English in Rome.
The word for wheel chair is, Sedia a Rotelle and the word for handicapped is Handicappato. They will then understand if you speak to them by e mail.
Ask if they have a bathroom you can get into and a large shower stall as they are generally on the small side.

There are lifts in the main station but that is about all your family will have to be on hand to help you.
You can go over to my site, www.italyexpat.blogspot.com it is written in English and you will find some links to other Italian sites too.
