Can Your Hcg Beta Go UP After A Miscarriage?

I'm pregnant at 46. My doctor thought I was about 5 weeks. (I think I was not that far along) At that time my beta hcg tested 228. The next week it went down (125). My doctor said I was going to miscarry. I did indeed bleed for 2 days, not very heavy, but more than spotting. My doctor wanted another beta test in a week to make sure I go down to 0. Yesterday, it went UP...to 156. The doctor still thinks I miscarried, but can not explain the rise. Can you miscarry and beta rise?

I have had 7 miscarriages.  I am not a doctor.  I am quite sure you miscarried.  In my cases I have had the same thing happen.  The hcg level if it is a normal pregnancy should double every other day.  In your case it is not.  If you are not bleeding badly, and your body is not passing the pregnancy then you may need a d&c to get cleaned out.  Some times your body can absorb the pregnancy tissue.  But if your hcg level is flucuating and not going down to 0 most likely that is what will need to be done.  Or you may have to take a medication to help you pass the pregnancy.
It is a very sad situation.  I am sorry you have to go through it.  Again, I am not a doctor but have gone through the same thing 7 times.  I have 4 children and am having my 5th in September.
If you miscarry there is nothing the doctor can do to save the baby.  It is a normal thing and happens to a lot of people.  There are support groups out there if you need them.  You can check some out on the internet too.
    Take care.

Well, the numbers went up again the following week to 200. When will they do down? How long will they continue to go up. My doctor did not recommend a D&C. This is not at all possible to be a viable pregnancy?

The presence of beta HCG levels in blood indicate pregnancy. Its levels below 0-5 means no pregnancy. After 5 weeks of pregnancy the normal levels are 18-7340. A level of 156 after 5 weeks your are pregnant. As you had bleeding, there are chances that all the contents of pregnancy were not aborted. For your satisfaction, get second opinion. Warning this is graphic. I did bleed for 2 days, probably a pad every 3-4 hours. Only lasted 2 days, 2nd day not as much. I was very busy that day. My eldest daughter graduated from college! You say 156 is pregnant. Do you mean "alive" pregnancy? I guess I have to see the beta numbers next week. Thanks for your input.

Well, my beta dropped by 100 points last week. I am just now hoping they go all the way down to 0 and I can get on with life! I will know after tomorrows blood test. Thanks for all the words or encouragement and advice.
