Kateri Tekakwitha (1656 – April 17, 1680), whose feast day is celebrated especially in the United States was a Mohawk warrior daughter in addition to being a Christian Algonquin woman. Her feast day is commemorated on July 14 particularly in the United States
She was an orphan who lost her family to chicken pox when she was just four. She was also badly scarred and left with poor eyesight. Her uncle, a clan chief then moved to adopt her. She was extremely interested in Christianity, went on to become baptized and pursued it with zeal. She was constantly persecuted by her people and had to move to Canada. Here she dedicated her live to prayer, caring for those sick and aged as well as penitential practices. She later decided to take a chastity vow. She died just a year later, when she was just 24.
