The buffalo is predominantly a grazing animal but extremely adaptable. In its natural habitat, the buffalo will do most of its foraging at night as it is sensitive to the heat. Daylight hours are usually reserved for resting and ruminating in the shade.
A gregarious animal, the buffalo has poor eyesight and hearing but a well developed sense of smell. Generally peaceable to their own kind, the buffalo can, under certain circumstances, become aggressive and formidable fighters. Wounded buffalo have been known to ambush or stalk pursuing hunters and have a justified reputation for being the most dangerous of big game animals.
Buffalo herds can range from a few individuals to several hundred animals. They are nomadic animals and will travel considerable distances in search of grazing. Old bulls often leave their herd to live alone or in small groups.
As they are akin to cows, buffalo meat, unsurprisingly, tastes like slightly stringy roast beef.
