What Is The Latest Information On Omega-3 Fatty Acids And Depression?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

A new report says there not really any convincing evidence that depression can be helped by taking omega-3 fatty acids. It may be that omega-3 fatty acids can lessen the symptoms of depression when given with anti-depressant drugs but, so far, not enough clinical experiments have been done to definitely show this is the case.

Some research has made claims that omega-3 levels are linked with some types of behaviour and mood disorders and there has been a lot of interest in this in the press. The idea of being able to take a natural product such as a fatty acid to alleviate depression is very attractive.

Omega-3 fatty acids are found in oily fish, leafy green vegetables, nuts and seeds. These are polyunsaturated fatty acids and have a wide range of functions in the body. They act as chemical transmitters in the brain and they are also involved in blood vessel repair and the immune system.
