Sweet corn (also known as sugar corn), is a hybridised variety of maize (Zea mays), specifically bred to increase the sugar content. It means that it is a corn plant developed in order to have young ears that are sweet and suitable for eating. It belongs to the grass family producing edible seed kernels. Sweet corn requires full sun, in a well dug soil which will warm quickly - clay is not suitable and takes 12 weeks from plant to harvest. Sweet corn can be classified as a vegetable because it falls in the vegetable category by description. Vegetable is described as an herbaceous (non-woody) plant or plant part that is eaten with the main course rather than as a dessert. It usually has a bland taste. Sweet corn is not a fruit as it does not fill the characteristics of a fruit. It does not develop ovary of a seed plant with its contents and accessory parts, as the pea pod, nut, tomato, pineapple, or any other ovary nor does the edible part of the plant develope from a flower with any accessory tissues, as the peach, mulberry and banana.
