Once your char as a whole is easy to read, make sure your words are equally easy to read. Pare down your words to key words and phrases only. Never give complete sentences. Never give complete paragraphs. A visual aid is no the same as a script. Any word important enough to put on a visual is important enough to spell out, avoid mysterious abbreviations that might confuse the audience.
Finally make sure your visual is easy to read by using effective lettering. Your letter must be large enough so your audience can see them. This statement sounds embarrassingly obvious, yet overly small lettering is one of the most common problems in visual aids. We cannot establish exact rules of thumbs for letter size because letter size varies with audience size and with projection distance. In general seat yourself in the back row of your audience t o check letter size. You may be surprised how large you need to write to write on a flip chart or board. You may be surprised to see how unreadable typed overhead transparencies themselves should be at least eighteen-point type for small groups, at least twenty-four or thirty six point type of for large groups.
