There are also thoughts on the subject that there are "degrees of ghostliness"
level 1 apparition: This is usually an echo... Of an event in a persons life. This can be in the form of audio (voices in the dark) or visual (like when you see a ghost walk through a wall). These are non-thinking entities unaware of their surroundings, they are kind of caught in a loop if you will.
Level 2 wraith: These are spirits that are actually conscious and can interact with the environment, walk around objects, or answer questions... But they cannot physically manipulate anything on this realm
level 3 poltergeist: This is believed to be the same as a wraith, but capable of manipulating the physical.

Now, as for what are ghosts? I believe, but of course cannot prove that they are a piece of a persons soul trapped here in this realm either because they are afraid to leave for the afterlife, or they feel cheated that their life has ended... Hence why you rarely hear stories of a "happy" ghost.

The word "ghost" refers to the spirit or a soul of a deceased person, or to any spirit. The belief in ghost as souls of the departed is linked with the ancient concept of animism, which attributed souls to everything in nature, including human beings, animals, plants etc.
Now every religious scholar and anthropologist has unique view points, there is no one justification as to confirm that they have come from hell or they are real spirits or not.
