Before getting a dog, you need to research the breed to see what fits your lifestyle.  You have to consider how much room you have and determine if you should be looking at big dogs or little dogs.  Dogs that shed or hypo allergenic (non-shedding) dogs.  Tiny dogs
can be easily hurt by children, you have to make sure your son understands that a dog is not a toy and that he would never intentionally hurt a dog or any animal.

There are MANY dogs that make great indoor pets.  In fact, all dogs
should be indoor pets.  Dogs are very social animals and no dog should be kept outdoors on a chain or in a pen and forgotten about.

Hounds are very easy going dogs that do not require a lot of activity.  However, All puppies require a great deal of attention until they are 12 to 18 months.  Most dogs start to mellow out after that.
All dogs require exercise.   Don't expect to get a dog and not have to do anything with it, unless it's an old dog.

For the most part, most mixed breeds make better pets.
