Venus Looks So Pretty In Pictures – Is It A Peaceful Place?

Pictures of Venus taken by space exploration craft do give the impression that it is a smooth, pink and purple planet and its name, after the Greek goddess of love, creates the feel of peace and tranquility. However, the reality is very different.

Venus is an incredibly harsh environment compared to even the wildest places on Earth. Venus is closer to the Sun that Earth and when the Sun heats it, very little can escape because it is trapped inside the atmosphere by the thick cloud cover that never breaks.

Temperatures on the surface reach 600 degrees Celsius, making Venus even hotter than Mercury, which is nearer to the Sun.

The clouds are also unimaginably awful – they contain concentrated sulphuric acid droplets instead of rainnwater and the atmosphere is almost completely made up of carbon dioxide. Any living thing from Earth left on Venus would die immediately.
