Sewing your own dress is a fun thing to do and is also very rewarding. It is easy and for beginners, it is a great experience. There are certain things that you should keep in mind while making a dress. There are many fabrics that can be used to make dresses like light weight cotton, denim, corduroy, wool, silk, velvet, etc. the best fabric to use for beginners is light weight cotton as it is easy to use and make patterns. Choose an easy dress pattern like a jumper or a spaghetti strap or a halter type dress, as these patterns will be easy to draw and sew. To make a dress you may need more fabric than you need while making a top or a skirt. Always keep in mind the length and the difficulty of the pattern while making the dress.
