At the beginning of a driving test in the UK, the driving examiner asks the candidate two questions about the safety of the car, before asking him or her drive off. The questions are taken from a list of 13 and are concerned with the maintenance of brake fluid, oil, the engine coolant and the windscreen wiper water. The examiner could also ask questions about the tread depth requirements of the vehicle's tyre, the tyre pressure and the power steering. "Show me" questions include asking the candidate to check whether the car's headlights, break lights, handbreak, and indicators are working.
Two correct answers in this part of the test can give a good impression of the candidate to the examiner. It shows that the learner driver is interested and serious about attempting to pass the test. Failure to answer one or both of the questions correctly usually results in a minor mark on the test.
