A system is basically made up of three main elements. They are inputs, processes and outputs. There are basically two types of systems. They are the open-loop systems and the closed-loop system.

The open-loop system is the most basic type of system. In this type of system, the inputs (which include the raw materials, the components, the labour, the research and development) trigger the processes (which include the production lines, the assembly lines, the management and the skills). The processes, in turn, control the outputs, which are also known as the end products.

The closed-loop system is a more complex type of system. In this type of system, apart from the inputs, the processes and the outputs, there is a fourth element which is known as the feedback element. The term feedback includes information, new ideas, expertise and customer feedback which result from the output of a system and are then fed back into the input to control the way in which the system works. In a closed-loop system, the output not only the end products, but also customer satisfaction and employee satisfaction.
