When you drink during pregnancy the alcohol you consume, along with any other food or drink, travels through the placenta. As a result, any alcohol intake will affect the unborn child in some way. While there has been no study to prove that light drinking causes any harm, moderate to heavy drinking (less than enough alcohol to get drunk) has severe consequences.
Queens University in Belfast recently carried out a study in which they set off a buzzer over a number of pregnant women's abdomens. The foetuses carried by those women who had not drunk alcohol during pregnancy displayed a reflex 'jumping' action. Far fewer children whose parents had drunk as little as four units of alcohol a week (two pints of beer), however, displayed any reaction at all.
British government guidelines state that four units is a safe limit when pregnant. However, as a result of the Queens study, the majority of researchers and GPs now recommend that no alcohol should be consumed at all during pregnancy.

The guidelines change depending on your country but to be 100% on the safe side it is wise to abstain for the nine months, it is not long and you will do yourself and the baby a lot of good!
