In the case of dancers, training is an on going continuous part of a dancer's career because they need to update themselves with the latest and modern dance routines. It is believed by experts that dancers should start off with a good base in classical dance before joining any particular style of dancing, in order to have a good foundation.

From the age of 7 or 8, a child is trained in ballet dancing with a private ballet teacher and after the age of 10 serious professional training starts for the child. Only those students who show talent and potential in dancing are supposed to seek advanced training at a later age. This would be the right time for them to decide if they should pursue it as a career or not and may join a college dancing program.

Many dance schools offer summer courses, from which they later on select only those students who have talent for regular full time training. Only for ballet it is required to have an early training, however for other styles of dancing training can start an age of about 17, when they even have auditions.
