A democracy is a form of government which is elected by the people. This form of government has several disadvantages:
  • The people in power might impose certain rules on the majority which are not favored by them and hence overshadow there voice
  • Complete manipulation of the general population by the elected minority
  • Not all citizens are aware of the political scenario present in their country and might just vote as a result of bribery
  • As the elected representatives have a fixed term or in other words a few years time to stay in power they focus on maintaining their position for next elections and furthermore on personal gains

Lack of participation in government by vast majority of citizens leads to decisions made by few.
Ability of the majority to legislate itself money.
"tyranny of majority"
Ideally, a monarchy where the monarch has the best interest of the society in mind would be the best form of government, but that's not going to happen.

A functional democracy requires an educated population and a good investigative press. When these are weakened (look at both of these institutions now vs 1980 and again vs 1950!), those in power can run amok. Now, we have a court that has given corporations human rights (figure that out!) and the power to buy and sell elections. All 3 branches of the government need to be vigilant about preserving a democracy. And we need to be at least as vigilant, if not more so. It takes time and commitment.

One disadvantage of Democracy as per some people is that it allows people to have freedom of thoughts and views which many may not agree with. For eg.
Many have different views about Prostitution and Marihuana, thus making these topics to be in a grey area.
