How Do You Remove Dewclaws And Tails Yourself On Pups?

I came out of the hospital and my dog has 3 day old pups. The vet was a real butt about it, said he needed to do it TODAY and wanted $10 a pup. Can I do it?

Why is your vet so keen on having you mutilate and inflict pain on the pups?  get a different vet!  i never understood this practice!

A lot of people consider tail docking a cruel procedure and if done later than 10 days of age it is then considered amputation. I would not do it yourself. Removing dewclaws is also done 5-10 days of age and can be done as an adult as well... If not done properly the puppies can bleed to death. www.wsava.org He probably insisted you do it now because of their age, but you could try another vet.

Is it still legal over there as it is very illegal over in England unless you own a working dog and can prove you work them and even then vets that dock are hard come by we also have to have a certificate to prove its been done legally not advised to do it yourself though

Yes it is legal. It is unheard of to NOT dock the tails and remove the dewclaws on alot of breeds. I deal with poodles. If you do not do this on them, you can't sell them, no one wants them like that. It is legal to do it yourself as well. I did it, obviously...I did not get a good answer as to how to do it, but I googled it and found a video. All you have to do is put a tiny rubberband on the tail two thirds down and in about 4 days it is gone. The dewclaws were a little bit trickier. I did clip them off with nail clippers, but some of them grew back, a breeder friend of mine told me that they would unless you fully extend the little nail when you clip the toe. It was a learning experience and I my husband got lightheaded. I really think I will make sure I have the money next time and just take them in and pay the $10 a pup. It was really easy, just not fun and kinda trying.

Wow, a lot of you guys are bonified wussies. Way too "civilized" and city-fied.

They're animals, and inferior to people BY A LONG SHOT. Brutalizing a 4 day old puppy? Give me a break, they'll be suckling again in 5 minutes.

Stop into a local feed store to get supplies and advice and get it done. Have a friend with you so you have help and for a 2nd opinion. Use clotting powder.

If anyone shouldn't be breeding, it's weak stomached tree huggers who put animals above people.

I use my pets, not only for love and companionship, but to get jobs done,...including teaching my children (and myself) life lessons. Something some of you whiners are lacking.

Wow, I'm civilized and don't require a dog to teach me life lessons.  Wow, I am so insulted.  NOT.

Some of you guys need to shut up because no one's whining and you shouldn't judge people because they love their animals and want to do the best for them. I believe removing dew claws is good because they can cause more pain later in life then just getting them removed. Removing tails, however, is just cruel. Tails give dogs a way to express themselves and without a tail they have no way to do that. Let the dog have a tail, Jesus!
