Answer Question

The actual cause of developing cataract is still unknown to the researchers; however, several studies have suggested that a deficiency of caretenoids and antioxidant supplements may help in the development of cataract. Antioxidants like vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E and beta-carotene shield the body tissues against converting into free radicals. It has been observed that vitamin C especially and exclusively plays a vital role in reducing the rate of cataract.

The lens protein is also supposed to be responsible in the formation of cataract. Initially the lens protein is in the soluble form, then it gets condensed and forms clump, gradually developing cataracts. A recent study has suggested the mutation in gene is responsible for the formation of juvenile cataract.

However, research is going on to find out the relationship between alcohol consumption and the formation of cataract. Research says that high-fat diet may be responsible for developing cataract.

Some medical conditions predispose a person to develop cataracts, the major one being diabetes.
Also sun damage or more specifically - ultra-violet light.
