The effects of friction can be more easily understood by first stating that there is more friction when the surfaces are rough as compared to smooth surfaces. The bad effects of friction and be seen when a person slips while walking on an icy surface. If there is friction within the parts of an engine then it will wear out easily. Similarly it’s a good and a necessary thing when to stop a car when the brakes are applied. The friction between the tyres and the brake pad increases friction and the car slows down. If there was no friction, moving objects would never stop and it would need an immense force to bring a static object into motion.

Friction is actually the force which is resisting the relative motion of two surface that are in contact. It is derived from the electromagnetic forces between the atoms and electrons.
The positive effects of friction are as follows:
- Friction can do positive work in inertial frame of reference.
- Friction is usually used to mix materials such as in polishing or in the technique of friction welding.
The negative effects of friction are as follows:
- Physical wear and tear of objects and parts is a major negative effect of friction.
- Materials usually degrade quickly due to continuous friction.
- Heat is often released as a result of friction between two parts.
- It can also result in erosion of surfaces.
- Bearing seizure can occur due to it.
- Corrosion can also occur due to friction.
