Well, there is a combination, mind you, it will smell bad for awhile, but you can try this home remedy.  Sprinkle baking soda all over the place.  Then get either cedar balls, you can buy them by the bunch and scatter all over.  If you can't get cedar balls, the of course being of wood and can be reused, there is moth balls, but man, that will really smell up place.  Leave for about a week, then air out basement as may give you headache from mothball smell.  This should clear things up.  I know that there are a lot of products on the maket, but these may not be cost effective. Some can be quite expensive.  Use as a last resort, or if you can afford.  Also, washing down floors with amonia will help.  Once again, will smell terrible, but when clears, all will be cleared

If it's a cement floor, TSP should work. I like the liquid better then the powder stuff.

I am in the process of buying a house and found out underneath of the house, the owner put cover the ground with a thick (1/2 foot) white powder? I dont know what that is. Please explain. Can we remove the powder later if so when. Right now the home inspector could not perform his inspection b/c he feared this powder is hazardous to his health. Is that true?

The floor should have stains in it where the cats urinated. If they are everywhere, you cannot try this. BUT if they are concentrated in one or two spots, you can brush the concrete with Muriatic acid. FOLLOW all instructions, use wall paper type bristle brush. DO NOT stand directly over spot as applying, as acid has strong fumes that you could feel in eyes and nose. The acid will neutralize the acid from the cats urine that has dried into the concrete. You can also check with the local zoo, as they have to remove urine on a daily basis, and they may have a trick or two to recommend.

I poured lemon juice on a wood flour and let it soak in.  I havent smelled cat urine since.  Dont know if it works on basement floors but Im sure I will find out.  Im in the process of buying a house that reeks of cat urine. Lemon juice did the trick here so hopefully it will work on the new house.

So did the lemon juice work?
We also are thinking about purchasing a home that more than reeks of cat urine. I think they have 10 indoor cats and kittens..... All carpet would have to go first thing (whole house is carpeted) and hopefully it has not permiated into the subflooring.... But the basement is where there are about 4 differant litter boxes.... And someone doesn't use them very often.... Prefers the floor. We don't want to use chemicals..... But will if that's what it takes.
