Liverpool first qualified to play in the then European Cup (now Champions League), in the ninteen sixty four - five season after winning the old first division championship the previous year.

Liverpool managed to make the semi finals in their first appearance chasing the trophy, losing in a highly controversial semi final second leg three nil against Inter of Milan.

This came after the reds beat the Italian side three one at Anfield.  The return at the San siro resulted in the Italians correcting the defecit with three hotly disputed goals inside the first twenty minutes, the first coming from an indirect free kick.

Many years later the Sunday times uncovered evidence to suggest, as the then Liverpool manager Bill Shankly had always suspected, the referee had been bribed to throw the match in Inter's favour.

After defeating Liverpool four, three over the two legs, Inter went on to lift the famous trophy for the second time.
