After a lengthy pause, filming of "The Ruth Rendell Mysteries" resumed in 1996 with the adaptation of "Simisola." Since then two more of her later novels have been filmed, "Road Rage" in 1998 and "Harm Done" in 2000. All adaptations feature the original cast, most importantly George Baker as Wexford. So far Rendell's most recent novels, such as "Babes in the Wood" have not been filmed. Those that have, however, show that she continues to explore contemporary themes. "Simisola" explores racism in 1990s Britain (in a twist typical of these dramas, Wexford is forced to confront his own, unconscious prejudices.) "Road Rage" is about environmental protestors; in this drama, Wexford's wife Dora (Louise Ramsay) is actually kidnapped by activists fighting the building of a new road. In "Harm Done" Wexford's daughter Sylvia is involved, through her work in a battered wives' shelter as well as her private life, in a case involving domestic violence.
