What Are The Health Benefits Of Using Basil?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

As basil is a member of the mint family, it is excellent for digestive complaints.  Used as a tea (a teaspoon of the dried herb to a cup of boiling water), it aids digestion and relieves flatulence.  Basil also has a slight sedative effect, making it good for headaches and anxiety.

Rich in eugenol, which relieves muscle spasms and acts as an anti-inflammatory, basil also contains high levels of flavonoids to protect cell structures from free radicals.  It's great for cardiovascular health with regular inclusion in the diet.

Adding basil to your meals inhibits the growth of food-borne disease bacteria, while making many foods more tasty.  This is true of the essential oil and the fresh or dried leaves.  The very scent of the herb is refreshing, making it the perfect accompaniment to many dishes.
