What Is Cape Cross In Namibia Best Known For?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Cape Cross is the point where the first known European made land fall in southern Africa. It was at Cape Cross that Portuguese explorer, Diego Cao planted a cross in 1486 to mark the occasion.

It is not clear why Cao put in at Cape Cross, but what might have attracted him to this part of the Namibian coastline was the need to replenish his stocks. For Cape Cross is Namibia's most northerly breeding ground for Cape fur seals Arctocephallus pusillis.

During the months of November and December as many as 200,000 seals squeeze into Cape Cross's beaches for the breeding season. This annual four fold increase of the resident colony turns the beaches into a chaotic writhing mass of blubber. With a hungry crew to feed, the sight of so many seals would have been like manna from heaven for the Portuguese explorer as he pushed the boundaries of the known world.
