Have The World Championships (Winter Sports) In Sapporo-Japan - Been A Financial Success?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

It's hard to tell, the opening night was splendid and full of entertainment, 35 000 visitors, and we presume most of them paid for the tickets.  But when Nordic-skiing started, only 100 – yes 100 Norwegians – and maybe even less – had tickets for the event – the ranks were empty.
To open the Nordic-skiing relay, an absolutely lousy Dixieland-Band consisting of 5 Japanese musicians was playing, dispersing everybody but those hard-hearted Norwegians- who drowned the tune in their own songs and beer. And this band was – would you believe it, the only additional entertainment after opening night! Europeans wonder why Japanese people always smile and bow, why men always run around in suit, white shirt and tie and women in short mini-dresses and walk in high heels on icy-streets. So everybody who was officially concerned with the event wondered why the Japanese sport-enthusiasts stayed away from the event – everybody but the Europeans – they found- there are heated toilet seats in Japan; having this – why move out into the cold, when there is no entertainment to speak of in the bargain, and you can watch the sport in TV?
