Carbon dioxide is a widely used substance. It is a gas at room temperature and pressure and is slightly acidic. It reacts with water to give carbonic acid. It is colorless and also has no odor. It is soluble in water, acetone and ethanol.

Some of the common uses of carbon dioxide are:

Added to fizzy or aerated drinks (that is what the bubbles in coke are)
Frozen into dry ice which is used for large scale refrigeration
Dry ice is also used as a theatrical tool to make mist and fog in plays and films
    Used in fire extinguishers
A constituent of medical gases that promote exhalation
    Euthanasia of small laboratory animals
    Used as an anesthetic

In the biological systems, the most important use of carbon dioxide is as a raw material for photosynthesis. It combines with water to produce carbohydrate molecules that can be utilized to yield energy or make more organic molecules.

One use is CO2 in the form or dry ice. You can get this at Publix, etc. It is solid CO2 and goes directly from solid to gas as it is used to cool down food, etc.
