Was There A Fantasy Film Called Legend?

A fantasy film entitled “Legend” was released in 1985 and had Tom Cruise in the lead as Jack. The story explores the theme of good and evil and is set in a fantasy world with typical fantasy creatures such as fairies, goblins, unicorns and demons. The story begins with the Lord of Darkness, who wishes to get rid of all light in the world. To this this, he instructs Blix, one of his goblins, to cut off the horn of two unicorns, stating that if they die, then sunlight will be gone forever.

The film then switches to princess Lily, who is roaming the forest. She enters the home of a woman named Nell who lives in the forest and upon noticing food on the table, takes some. She is then startled by a young man named Jack, who is a hermit and her love interest. Jack has a surprise for Lily and takes her to see the two unicorns. As he does this, Blix and his two accomplices, Blunder and Pox, prepare to shoot the unicorns. Overwhelmed by the beauty of the unicorns, Lily makes her way towards them to touch them, despite Jack's warning for her not to. As she touches them, Blix fires a dart and hits the male unicorn. Jack, despite being furious at Lily for touching one of the unicorns, accepts a challenge from her when she states that she will marry whoever finds the ring that she is wearing. She then tosses the ring into a river far below and jack jumps to retrieve it. As he does so, Blix catches up with the unicorn that was hit by the dart and chops its horn off, resulting in its death.

The death of the unicorn causes the atmosphere to change greatly and the previously beautiful weather transforms into a snowstorm. Lily flees and Jack becomes trapped under the water when it freezes over, but manages to break free. Lily makes her way to Nell's house, only to find that Nell, her family and everything in their home, including the food from earlier, has completely frozen as a result of a curse caused by the death of the unicorn. Blix, Pox and Blunder arrive at Nell's home and Lily hides. As she listens to the goblins discussing the death of the unicorn, she begins to think that it is her fault that the curse has occurred and believes that touching the unicorn contributed towards its death. She swears to make things right and sets off from Nell's home.

Jack, having escaped from the water and unable to find Lily's ring, makes his way through the storm and encounters Honeythorn Gump and his group of friends, which are a fairy named Oona and two dwarves named Screwball and Brown Tom. Gump initially berates Jack for taking Lily to see the unicorns due to her touching them, but when Jack reveals he did it for love, Gump softens and the group toast love. The group decide to set off to search for Lily and to put things thing right. During the journey, they come across the surviving female unicorn, who is grieving for the loss of the other one. In a touching scene, Jack approaches the surviving unicorn and apologises to it, stating that he meant no wrong.

Later, when Brown Tom and Screwball are left to guard to female unicorn whilst Jack searches for weapons, Lily appears and warns them that the goblins are approaching to take the unicorn. Lily is then kidnapped by the goblins and the female unicorn is also taken. Jack, who now has weapons, learns that Lily is still alive from he dwarves and they set off to find her.

Whilst Lily is held captive at the Lord of Darkness's lair, he becomes attracted to her and uses magic to place her under a spell. He then tries to charm her, and Lily, whose appearance changes and becomes much darker, initially snubs him, but then surprises him be requesting that she gets to kill the unicorn. Meanwhile, Jack, Gump and the rest of the group are captured but manage to break free after Oona, who appears to be attracted to Jack and tries to use Lily's appearance to win his affections, sets them free.

Upon discovering that light will destory the Lord of Darkness, Jack and his friends use large shields to reflect the light from outside. Lily prepares to kill the unicorn and Gump tells Jack that she now belongs on the Lord of Darkness's side and that Jack should kill her. Jack, however, trusts Lily and sure enough, Lily sets the female unicorn free rather than taking its horn.

The Lord of Darkness then hits Lily, knocking her unconscious, which results in Jack intervening. There is a final fight between Jack and Darkness and Darkness is finally destroyed when Jack stabs him with male unicorn's horn and the last reflective shield causes Darkness to be taken away.

The film ends with Jack finally retrieving Lily's ring and placing it on her finger, which awakens her from the spell. The male unicorn's horn is placed back in place and it comes back to life, resulting in light returning again. At the end of the film, Jack and Lily bid Gump and the others goodbye.
