What Is The Ultimate Question Of Life, The Universe And Everything?

Answer Question

In "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy," the answer to the Ultimate Question, which supposedly will explain our place in the universe, is 42. So billions of years are spent calculating the Ultimate Question to go with it. After many adventures the main characters, Arthur Dent and Ford Prefect, find themselves (space) shipwrecked on a planet inhabited by pre-literate Neanderthal types; this planet is in fact "Earth Mark II", a huge computer containing the Ultimate Question! To gain access to the Question, Arthur constructs a Scrabble set, teaches his grunting hosts how to play and eventually gets one of them to spell the Question, which is: WHAT DO YOU GET IF YOU MULTIPLY SIX BY NINE? From this, Arthur and Ford deduce that there is something fundamentally wrong with the universe, and abandon the search for meaning. (The TV series ends here, although the last of the source novels does pick up the idea of Ultimate Meanings again.)
