It was started in 1822 and was an open air market. After a fire in 1975, it was restructured in 1992 and thus was also listed in the Grade I listed buildings.
Kirkgate also holds a railway station in near Wakefield. It is the Wakefield Kirkgate Station. It is a common station on the Hallam, Pontefract and Huddersfield lines. It was started in 1840 and Wakefield Westgate Railway Station in 1867. The present station was built in 1854. Today, Wakefield Kirkgate Station is in neglected state. It is listed in the Grade II listed buildings.
