Virgin Records is owned by Richard Branson. It is a British Recording Label founded in the year 1972. It was also co-founded by Nik Powell. The duo actually ran a record shop in London which went by the name of 'Virgin record shop'. The name was suggested to Branson by a friend who thought they were all new to the business like a "Virgin". Hence the name would be suitable.
The first ever album release on the Virgins Record Label was the masterpiece progressive rock album known as 'Tubular Bells'. The album was composed by the multi instrumental artist Mike Oldfield. This album was released in the year 1973, a year after the establishment of Virgin Records. The most famous signing by Virgin Records in their early days was undoubtedly that of the Sex Pistols.
In the June of 1992 Branson sold of Virgin Records to Thorn EMI for an estimated $1 billion deal.
