With gauging or stretching, the thicker needle the greater the pain experienced during piercing. Tapering is the most frequent professional technique used for stretching piercing, using a taper, which is a specially designed conical rod. Tapers are used to gradually stretch the piercing. A taper is first lubricated and then pushed through the fistula (hole in the skin) until the widest portion of the taper is in level with the skin around the piercing. Larger pieces of jewellery are then pushed through, kept parallel to the taper's back. You need to carefully follow the instructions given. Some people prefer to first massage the ear lobe and soak it in warm water. Tapers are available in a wide range of sizes and are generally identified by the gauge of their large end. Tapers can also vary in length, although most are about 2-3 inches. To make insertion easier, some tapers have threads coming out from the wide end that allows the attachment of barbell jewellery.
