I Have An Old House And Can't Get My Wireless Broadband In Different Rooms. What Can I Do?

Answer Question

Wireless broadband systems are becoming more popular because they allow you to be able to access the internet and email anywhere in the house without trailing wires or having to have rewiring done in walls.

The systems work well in modern houses in which the walls are made from plasterboard and in small houses. However, if you have a rambling 18th century farmhouse with internal and external walls 30 cm thick and made of two layers of brick, the wireless signal cannot be transmitted very far.

A quick and relatively inexpensive solution is to buy a network extender system that plugs into the mains system of the house. The transmitter is plugged into a socket near the broadband router and is connected to it directly using an Ethernet cable. Then, an extender plug is placed in the room where broadband cannot be received. The broadband signal passes from the router, through the transmitter, through the mains cables of the house and into the extender, which then acts as a wireless transmitter in the previously out of range room. Netgear makes one and most online broadband stores have others.
