My Son Has A 1 Year Old Cat That Eats Everything In Sight! Why Is He Always So Hungry?
This is a male, neutered, indoor-only cat. Very active but can NEVER get enough to eat. He is in good health and NOT overweight. He eats dry cat food as well as anything else (bread, lettuce, fruit). Any ideas as to why he's always so hungry?

Your cat needs to be examined by a veterinarian. Initially a fecal examination testing for intestinal parasites and bacterial overgrowth should be performed. Also bloodwork should be run to rule out a liver shunt and determine if his protein levels are low. There are problems that can occur with protein or fat absorption from the intestinal tract. Congenital kidney problems can also lead to inappropriate excretion of protein and failure to thrive.
There are other diseases that can cause increased appetite and lack of weight gain more common in older cats. These include hyperthyroidism, chronic renal failure, diabetes, and cancer (like lymphoma).
