Appendicitis occurs when the appendix becomes blocked and infected. The appendix is a small blind ended tube at the bottom of the large intestine. In other mammals, it is larger and responsible for digesting cellulose rich plant material – in humans it has become almost redundant.
However, it can cause problems if food becomes impacted there and the tissue becomes infected. If untreated, the appendix can burst and caused a generalized infection of the abdomen – peritonitis – which can be life threatening.
Appendicitis is very common in children aged 11 to 20 but it can occur at any age. It starts with a pain in the abdomen that begins in the centre and moves down to the right. Nausea and vomiting may follow and the pain gets worse. People don't feel like eating and feel generally unwell with a fever. The only treatment is surgical removed of the appendix, which should be done straight away.

Does appendicitis feel sort of like a pulled muscle to begin with?

The symptoms of appendicitis include elevated temperature, sometimes a somewhat hardened lower right abdomen, and "rebound" pain.  This means when you press on the abdomen, in the lower right side, and let go quickly, the pain with be intense, worse than the pain you may be feeling already.  Vomiting could also occur.
