How Can I Best Avoid Scalding Injuries At Home?

Answer Question

In the UK, about 600 people per year suffer severe and even fatal scalding injuries.  Old folk and children are most vulnerable (they have thinner skin).

Turn the thermostat down on your hot water tank (or combi-boiler).  Most sources would recommend that the maximum temperature needed is 46 degrees; occasionally it's suggested that 60 degrees might be better to eliminate the risk of Legionairre's disease.  There is no argument for having it above 60 degrees C, though.  Keeping the thermostat at 60 degrees or less will save energy (and money).  However, 60 degrees is still hot enough to cause a 3rd degree burn in a toddler in only 5 seconds.

When running a bath, add cold water then hot water to the cold.

On the cooker, turn pan handles inwards (towards the wall).

Do not leave hot drinks within reach of toddlers; a hot drink may still be able to scald a child 20 minutes after it was poured.

If possible, install a mixing valve on hot taps.  Future safety regulations will make these mandatory when plumbing work is done.
