What Do You Know About The Etymology Of Agnosticism?

Answer Question

The term "Agnostic" was at first introduced by the famous Thomas Henry Huxley in the year 1869 who used it to describe his philosophy.  Thomas Henry Huxley's philosophy rejects the philosophy of Gnosticism. He did not simply use this term to refer to the religius group of  the early 1st millennium, but he used it to refer all claims of occult or of mystical knowledge. The Philosophy of Thomas Henry Huxley is not the same as the trivial and casual interpretation of the word, Agnosticism. Infact, this meaning carries a much more negative implication for any religion or religious belief than the much more trivial interpretation of the word.

The Early Christian church leaders also used the Greek word gnosis ( meaning knowledge) in order to describe the "spiritual knowledge". Agnosticism, the term, is not to be confused or mixed up  with religious views that oppose the doctrine or philosophy of gnosis and the Gnosticism— these are the religious concepts which are not usuall related to the term agnosticism at all. Huxley used this term in a much more broader sense.
In more recent times, the recent use of this word 'agnosticism" which is taken to mean not knowable is more in operation in scientific literature such as in psychology and in the neuroscience
