What Is The Star Of Africa?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The Star of Africa is actually a diamond which is a giant 530 carats.  It is set in the British Royal Sceptre, which is used on certain official royal ceremonies i.e. the opening of Parliament etc.
The diamond is around the size of an average egg and was actually cut from the Cullinan diamond, which was discovered in January 1905 at the Premier Mine, located in the Transvaal of South Africa.
The Cullinan diamond was an incredible 3106 carats.  Most diamond rings do not even register as one carat, so the value attached to a diamond of this size is almost priceless.
Luckily for Britain, South Africa was still part of the British Empire and the diamond was given to Edward VII for his 60th birthday.  It was then cut into smaller diamonds,  with aroudn 110 smaller daimonds being crafted, the biggest of which is the Star of Africa.
