No, its a myth. Try baking soda, a bottle of peroxide and a tablespoon of liquid hand soap. Mix in three cups of warm water. Let it soak for three minutes.  It wont get rid of the smell but damn near best concoctsion my vet ever prescribed. Might have to do it a couple of times.

I made the mistake of trying the tomato juice and it did not work at all. If anything, it made the smell worse and made my blonde dog turn red. Try an odor neutralizer product like BON-CC-41. They are true odor neutralizers, not masking agents!
