Answer Question

The most common type of high blood pressure (also called hypertension) is primary hypertension. More than 9 in 10 people with high blood pressure have primary or essential hypertension. You might think this means this sort of high blood pressure develops first and another type follows, but it doesn't. Primary hypertension just means high blood pressure that occurs without any known cause.

However, although the exact cause of this type of high blood pressure isn't fully understood, there are several factors that are known to be associated with it. People who have primary hypertension are more likely to smoke and have a family history of the condition. Many of them are overweight and do little exercise. High blood pressure is also common in people who drink large amounts of alcohol, especially people who binge drink. These sorts of lifestyle factors are thought to work together to cause many health problems, including a tendency to develop high blood pressure.
