A birth certificate is printed on red paper, with an intricate design to prevent forgery. The paper is slightly longer and slightly narrower than an A4 piece of paper.
A birth certificate tells the name of the place where the birth occurred, giving the district, sub-district and County, with the year of the birth. In the columns below the main heading, the certificate also records the date and exact place of birth, including sometimes the time of birth. It has the first name of the child, the name of the father and his occupation or job or trade, the name and maiden name of the other and the signature or mark, name and address of the informant, the person responsible for registering the birth.
Usually the informant is the father but many hospitals now have a registrar visit maternity units a few times a week so that new mothers can register the birth of their baby before they leave hospital.

how is it handled when a mother refuses to divulge the identity/whereabouts of the father of her child (in England)? Do they put 'unknown' in the place of the information not provided? Is there a legal penalty for not providing this information?
