Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

It is believed that people who were fancied by the views and personality of the famous US politician Henry Clay modelled themselves after this man and even called themselves 'Henry Clay.' He was born on 12th April, 1977 in Hanover County, Virginia. He was elected to the US House of Representatives between 1811 and 1825. He was influential in sending the US into the War of 1812.  Clay was among those who were in favour of a national monetary policy of protective tariffs also called as the 'American System.' He is also credited with supporting the idea of a nationalized bank and contributing to the betterment of internal transportation. Clay was called the 'Great Compromiser' and the 'Great Pacificator' because he played a pivotal role in devising the three milestone sectional compromises:  the Missouri Compromise (1820), the Tariff Compromise (1833), and the Compromise of 1850. Immediately after his death in 1852, his 'Whig' party disappeared into oblivion.
