It is best to have a tour of the facilities and try out the equipment before joining. Most clubs allow a complementary visit which is an excellent opportunity to try out a club and see if you feel it is a good fit for you.
The instructors, trainers, etc. should be certified otherwise you risk the possibility of causing injury. The equipment and classes available should meet your needs/interests.
As it is so easy to come up with excuses why not to go to the gym today, find one that is reasonably close to your home or work. If you don't have to travel too far then it will be easier to find the time to go regularly.
Look to friends and coworkers for recommendations. They may even be looking for someone to join them at the gym. When you have another person to go with it is preferable as you motivate each other to keep going! Hope this helps give you some ideas.
