A baby whale is called a calf. There are many different types of whale, but one of the biggest is the Humpback Whale which can grow to be about 52 feet long and weigh between 30 and 50 tonnes. The female is slightly larger than the male and both sexes have a four-chambered heart, which weighs about 430 pounds ~ about the same as three average adult human beings.
Humpbacks come in four different colours, ranging from white to gray to black and mottled. They have distinctive patches of white on the underside of their tails ~ otherwise known as the fluke. These markings, like the finger-prints on humans, are unique to each whale and no two whales have the same markings. Humpback whales have 14 ~ 35 groves in their throat that run from the chin to the navel. These groves allow their throat to expand during the huge intake of water when they are filter feeding.
