The term romance language refers to a set of languages that are linked by their historical derivative. The romance languages are the major branch of the Indo-European language family. Italian, French, Portuguese and Spanish are all classified as romance languages. Their common factor is that they all stem from the Latin language. The Latin language was spread due to the travels and conquering of the Roman Empire, and are now mainly apparent in Europe, the Americas and Africa though they are used in other areas of the world. Over 700 million people speak a native romance language worldwide.

The romance languages all have the syntax, morphology, phonology and lexicon of the Vulgar Latin from which they derive. This is in spite of variations that naturally occurred due to later invasions. The Vulgar Latin was the more commonly spoken latin of the Romans; a classical Latin also existed but this differed and was limited to the higher class ands scholastics of the time.
