In the book "Runaway Jury" by John Grisham Marlee is one of the protagonists of the story. Her personality is very mysterious. The defense that is headed by Rankin Fitch does not know her motives till near the end regarding her actions. At first they assume them to be purely greed. Marlee makes contact with the defense side from early on and suggests to them at first that she can in some way manipulate the decision of the jury.
As time progresses the defense team which is somewhat skeptical starts to believe that she is capable of doing just that and even pays her $10 million to get the jury to rule in their favour. The defense realizes late in the game that Marlee's motives are not purely financial and that her parents had died of lung cancer.
